So Much Design Time!

I spent some time playing with the invoice site Freshbooks’ formatting/ setup for my account. My client has asked me to send them an invoice at the end of my work so they can get reimbursed from the U of I, so I signed up for the free demo at this site. Although I have very little experience with the formalities of freelance design, such as invoicing or time estimates, I like Freshbooks quite a bit. They have a nice, easy-to-use interface and seem friendly from their articles and emails. I was worried about getting lost in setting up an invoice, but their site makes learning the more formal parts of freelancing easy.

I also spent my school-free day on Friday doing an illustration that I thought of and might use if I ever get around to redesigning I’m pretty pleased with the way it came out, especially since this is one of the only times I’ve done any sort of complex illustration in Illustrator.

As far as the rest of the site redesign goes I’m kind of struggling with the basic decisions – large thumbnails or small ones and CSS vs. Flash are the main ones. I’d really like a combination like Firstborn has, because it’s important to me that you be able to use the back button on my site, but I’d really like the slick display of Flash as well. I found some information about it, but I’ll have to wait until I start designing to put the tutorial to work.

I watched the Devil Wears Prada today, and it makes me want to be a bit more stylish. >.< One of my goals is already to stop buying clothes at Goodwill and weed out my pants that have holes in them, even if they’ve been patched. As a young professional who will be looking for a design job soon, I need clothes that I can wear to work and to meetings. At my summer co-op I found I was a bit short on clothes for an office job. People in Europe also clearly take a bit more care with their appearance than at least 90% of my friends in the US, so I need to dress better around here too. I’m trying to take it a little at a time as far as upgrading my wardrobe goes, but since I have a year of college left I think it’s not a problem.
