The past week has been fairly quiet, as I’ve been working on homework and a personal project pretty continuously. I have gone out to see a couple of shows and stuff with Janine, which were fun. Yesterday was Kindertag, so the theater downtown was running free shows and crafts and stuff for kids, and I went down for the last couple of hours to say hi to Janine and Micha, who were working there all day. It took me a little while to figure out what all was going on, but I got to see a great band playing German folk music or something. There was a fiddle player, an upright bass, and — a GUY WITH AN ACCORDION :D He was singing in German too, and besides the infusion of awesome from the accordion, the band sounded great! I was sad that I only got to hear the last couple of songs. Then I found Janine and Micha just in time to be shooed into the youth actors’ club’s performance of … something. I guess it was the history of the theater, but it was hard for me to understand what all was going on. The students did a good job, but the writing could have been better. It was nonetheless, a nice way to spend the afternoon.
Saturday night, everyone in our apartment went to see “Einer flog über das Kuckucksnest.” To my surprise, we also got seats next to my square dance caller and his daughter. As people keep reminding me, Dessau is very small… Again the show was hard for me to keep track of, but by the end I felt like I’d understood the majority of it. My dad pointed out that the book is hard enough to understand in English. Since I’ve never read the book it felt very culturally educating, but I wasn’t terribly surprised at the ending. The actors were great though! It was a lot of fun to watch.
Last week, Janine’s mom came up for the evening and we went to see Angels & Demons (for some reason they renamed it Illuminati, auf Deutsch). The movie was fun, but Dan Brown isn’t really my kind of author. Too much license with reality. The characters as presented in the movie were really interesting though. And I totally knew there was something wrong when they broke in to save the Ewan McGregor guy near the end! It was a fun “romp,” as movie critics like to say, and it would be cool to play it as an RPG scenario, but I’m just as happy I haven’t read the book.
Last night there was a double rainbow. I don’t think my picture does it justice – the light on the buildings made it look really romantic. You can just barely see the second rainbow above the main one.
In other news, I’m finally managing to cook meat until it’s done! Most of the time. I’m getting better at it, anyway. My goal is to be able to cook meat perfectly by the time I return from Germany :P
