One question that I hear a lot as someone mostly-raised Unitarian Universalist, is “how is spirituality different from religion?” Fortunately having been through the YRUU program, we examined a lot of these sort of questions and compared opinions to help grow our own ideas in the UU “search for truth and meaning.” In fact, I think these two ideas are quite different and it is crucial to recognize they (more…)
I returned to Rochester for two days (“I’ll be here two days… / Then I will be gone…”) for a reunion with good friends, a visit with the photo group, yarn adventures with Marissa, a sugar maple festival, a church service, and two showings of FirstLight Players‘ Death Takes A Holiday. It was a whirlwind trip but very excellent and much needed now that I’ve been away for two months.
I did get in in time for dinner and the Friday night opening of (more…)
One of the photographers I did that practice modeling shoot with in the fall is, to my surprise, exhibiting some of the photos at the Image City Gallery in Rochester (very close to Starry Nites cafe) March 25 through April 20, 2014. Apparently my “legs have made it big time,” according to the photographer, Gil Maker. If you feel inclined, stop by and see those photos as well as the great student work being exhibited! I gather there is a reception Friday night. (more…)
This is long overdue, but considering I’ve gone through about 500 photos (which is a lot for me), once I got them all selected and processed and up to Facebook, I didn’t feel much like going through them again to pick out a few select photos for my blog. Finally got over that though!
You can see the full galleries from the rehearsals (more…)
I’ve just finished my first week of designing at NewCity, and you’ll be glad to know it’s been awesome. I’ve been kept surprisingly busy for my first week, working up a style guide for their recently-released work on the VQR, and doing image processing as well as some actual web page design work for an exotic educational project the company is redesigning. That’s been exciting as it involves looking (more…)
In moving to Blacksburg, I’ve unfortunately left behind the musical, “Death Takes A Holiday,” that First Unitarian has been working on. They’ve given me some good creative freedom in creating imagery for the show, so I took advantage of that to create what I hope might be something iconic for their production.
I started off with some snapshot reference photos (more…)
A lot of you already know that I’ve gotten a job in Blacksburg, which is in southwestern Virginia. It’s a town of about 42,000 in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is home to Virginia Tech as well as increasing number of startup-type companies, and lots of outdoor activities. The job is at NewCity, a great little interactive agency with high standards for themselves and for their clients, and a great sense of (more…)
December 1 was the first read-through of the script for Firstlight Players’ 2014 production. The production will be the musical “Death Takes A Holiday,” performances the fourth weekend in March, at the First Unitarian Church of Rochester. It’s pretty exciting, since I’m in the Ensemble and several of my friends are also going to be involved with the show – plus new ones I’m sure I’ll be making! (more…)
So with Thanksgiving coming up, I’ve been doing some thinking in good Unitarian fashion as to what holidays I would like to celebrate – which ones would I find personally meaningful, without relation to what the population at large celebrates? A friend was just telling me about how important “Gettysburg Address Day” is to him (did you know we just passed the 150th anniversary btw?), (more…)
